OTTUMWA — Joyce L. Goeke, 72, of Ottumwa, died April 4, 2014, at The Good Samaritan Society-Ottumwa. A 1960 graduate of Oswego High School in Oswego, Ill., she attended Indian Hills Community College. She worked as a driver’s license examiner for 25 years. She was an avid gardener and reader who enjoyed spending time playing cards, croquet, board games, quilting, attending Cornell College sporting events and watching Iowa Hawkeye sports.

She and Dave also traveled extensively and loved attending sporting events with friends and family. Joyce was born April 8, 1941, in What Cheer to Jessie M. Wilcox and John Frank Damerval. In 1972, she married David L. Goeke, who survives her, along with her children, Jerilyn (Keith) Kuester of Phillips, Wis., Jerry (Dawn) Goeke of West Des Moines and Sandi (Pat) Tucker-Stanbro of Oskaloosa. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Jonna (Terry) Treadway, Adam (Alexandra) Lunt, Justine Goeke, Jillian Goeke and Maycie Stanbro; two great-grandchildren, Alyssa and Tyler Treadway; a sister, JoAnn Smith of Des Moines; a brother, Jeff (Nancy) Damerval of Ottumwa; and sister-in-law Marcella Damerval of Topeka, Kan.

Joyce is also remembered by close family friends, Tina and Larry Hargis and their family. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, John W. Damerval; a daughter, Jeanette; and close family friend, Nancy Jones. No visitation or funeral is planned, but the family will host a Celebration of Life event from 1 to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 9, at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Ottumwa. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials may be made to the Ottumwa Public Library, Ronald McDonald House or Cornell College Athletic Department.
